Andaman and Nicobar Islands

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are India's most remote sourcing address — six hundred islands strung across the Bay of Bengal, closer to Myanmar and Indonesia than to the mainland. Trade here is necessarily small, marine and specialty-grade, and that is exactly the niche the islands serve.

What the islands actually supply

Marine lines. The surrounding waters support tuna, reef-fish and crab fisheries with processing at Port Blair; the islands' deep, clean seas position them for premium and sashimi-grade catch as cold-chain capacity grows.

Coconut and spice. Coconut, arecanut and small plantations of clove, nutmeg and pepper grow across the island chain — virgin coconut oil and island-spice lots trade as origin curiosities with genuine scarcity.

Heritage rice. The GI-tagged Andaman Karen Musley Rice, grown by the Karen community of Mayabunder — descendants of Burmese settlers — is the islands' protected-origin flagship: a small-harvest grain with a story no mainland rice can tell.

Island craft. Shell craft (from permitted species), coconut-shell ware and cane work supply the tourism trade and small export lots.

The honest logistics picture

Everything moves by sea or air through Port Blair, with mainland consolidation at Chennai or Kolkata. Shipping windows follow the monsoon; volumes are lots, not containers. Environmental regulation is strict — reputable buyers work only with licensed traders, especially for any marine or shell product.

Who should bother

Specialty-food importers collecting single-origin rice, coconut and spice stories; premium-seafood buyers with cold-chain patience. The islands are a provenance postscript to an India programme — tiny, distinctive and unduplicable.
