Assam

Assam grows the tea the world drinks at breakfast and weaves a silk no other place on earth produces. The golden Muga — GI-protected, spun by a silkworm that lives only in the Brahmaputra valley — headlines a sericulture tradition centred on Kamrup district, whose ODOP designation pairs muga with cream-white pat silk from the weaving town of Sualkuchi.

Tea, the volume story

Assam is the world's largest single tea-growing region. Udalguri's ODOP entry — orthodox and green teas — marks the premium end of a trade that runs from garden-direct specialty lots to the CTC that fills global breakfast blends, sold through the Guwahati auction centre. Buyers can work the spectrum: estate marks for specialty lists, blend-grade volume for private label.

The golden thread and the craft valley

Muga and pat weaving support thousands of looms around Sualkuchi — "the Manchester of the East" — producing mekhela chador sets, stoles and yardage for fashion houses seeking fibres with genuine scarcity. The GI list extends into the valley's material culture: Sarthebari bell-metal craft, Pani Meteka water-hyacinth weaving (a plastics-alternative story ready-made), Mishing handloom textiles and even the Bihu dhol.

From the orchards and hives

District ODOP designations map a specialty-foods basket: the fragrant Assam Lemon from Tinsukia, ginger from West Karbi Anglong, Tamulpur's honey. Add small-holder spice and bamboo lines and the state serves gourmet and natural-products importers well beyond tea.

Getting out of the valley

Guwahati is the Northeast's logistics pivot — air cargo, rail to Kolkata's ports, and the developing Brahmaputra river routes to Bangladesh. Tea moves on practised corridors; craft and food lines consolidate in Guwahati.

Tea importers at every grade, luxury-fibre and handloom buyers (muga has no substitute), natural-materials brands eyeing water-hyacinth and bamboo, and specialty-food traders. Assam is a single-origin state in the truest sense.
