Gujarat

Gujarat is India's export machine. The state ships a disproportionate share of the country's merchandise — diamonds, textiles, chemicals, ceramics, pharmaceuticals — through the world's largest commercial port complex at Mundra and the older gateway at Kandla. If a category has industrial scale in India, Gujarat almost certainly has a cluster for it.

Three clusters, three world markets

Surat cuts and polishes the vast majority of the world's diamonds — its ODOP designation pairs diamonds with man-made textiles, and houses like Hari Krishna Exports anchor a jewellery trade that runs from rough stone to finished export. Morbi is one of the largest ceramic-tile clusters on earth, hundreds of plants deep in tiles, sanitaryware and — a quirk of history — wall clocks. Bhuj and the Kutch district hold the craft end: GI-protected Kutch Embroidery and Kutch Ajrakh block printing, bandhani tie-dye and Rogan art, produced by artisan communities whose work is Kutch's ODOP product.

The textile spine

Ahmedabad built India's first cotton-mill economy and still hosts giants — Arvind Limited among them — while Welspun's Anjar campus ranks among the world's largest towel and bed-linen operations. The GI roster adds depth for brand storytellers: Ahmedabad Sodagari block prints, Bharuch Sujani weaving, Surat Sadeli marquetry.

Industry by district

The ODOP map reads like an industrial directory: brass parts from Jamnagar (the world's brass-turning capital), chemicals from Valsad, pharmaceuticals from Vadodara. Add Jamnagar's refinery complex and the Dahej chemical corridor, and Gujarat covers commodity inputs as thoroughly as finished goods.

Logistics. Mundra and Kandla put most Gujarati factories within a day of a berth, and the state's export documentation culture is India's most practised. Buy from Gujarat for ceramics, textiles and home linen, diamonds and jewellery, brass components, chemicals and pharma intermediates — and treat Kutch as a bonus: world-class craft provenance an afternoon's drive from world-class container terminals.
