Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh weaves India's two most elegant heritage fabrics and grows its next food trend, all from the geographic centre of the country. The GI-protected Chanderi — gossamer silk-cotton with woven butis — and Maheshwari sarees from the Narmada town of Maheshwar are the state's flagship exports to the fashion trade, produced on handlooms in the towns that name them.

The handloom towns

Chanderi and Maheshwar work as vertically complete craft towns: dyeing, warping, weaving and finishing within walking distance, master-weaver cooperatives that take design briefs, and cloth that global designers cut into occasionwear and scarves. Ujjain's ODOP designation adds batik printing, extending the textile file beyond the looms.

The millet moment

Singrauli's ODOP products — kodo and kutki millets — sit at the centre of the global ancient-grains wave, alongside GI-tagged Bundelkhand Kathiya wheat, Ratlam's pungent Riyawan garlic and forest-collected mahua from Umaria, a flower now appearing in craft spirits and natural sweeteners. Tikamgarh's ginger and Vidisha's farm-equipment cluster round out an agri portfolio that spans the plate and the field.

Stone and forest craft

GI-listed Jabalpur Stone Craft carves the region's marble and soft stone into decor and temple statuary; the state's tribal belts produce Gond painting and dokra bronze for the folk-art market — categories where provenance documentation directly sets price.

Practicalities

Landlocked but central: cargo rails from Bhopal, Indore and Jabalpur to the western ports, and Indore's dry port serves the state's pharma and textile shippers. Source from Madhya Pradesh for heritage handlooms with GI paperwork, millets and specialty agri lines, stone craft and tribal art — categories where the state has little Indian competition, let alone Chinese.
