Uttarakhand runs two sourcing economies at different altitudes. On the plains, the SIDCUL industrial estates at Haridwar, Pantnagar and Dehradun host pharmaceutical, automotive-component, FMCG and packaging plants built under two decades of industrial incentives. In the hills above them, Garhwal and Kumaon sustain craft and farm traditions that now carry some of India's most distinctive GI registrations.

The industrial floor

The SIDCUL belt is the practical entry point for volume buyers: contract manufacturing in personal care, ayurvedic and herbal formulations (Haridwar is home to some of India's largest such plants), auto components, and consumer goods — all within a four-hour truck run of Delhi-NCR's ports of exit. Herbs, aromatics and hill agriculture

Uttarakhand's forests and terraced farms supply medicinal herbs, essential-oil botanicals and niche crops that define its farm-export identity. Craft from the temple belt

The hills' woodworking tradition is formalised in two GIs: Uttarakhand Likhai, the ornate architectural wood carving of Kumaoni homes and temples, and the Chamoli Wooden Ramman Mask, carved for a UNESCO-listed ritual theatre and now collected as folk art. Rudraprayag's ODOP wood crafts — temple-imitation carvings — extend the same lineage, while the GI-listed Rangwali Pichhoda of Kumaon brings the region's hand-painted ceremonial textile into fashion and homeware ranges.

Logistics: Delhi's mountain neighbour

Nothing in the industrial belt is far from the national capital region — cargo moves by road to Delhi's air terminals or by rail toward Mundra and Nhava Sheva. Hill products consolidate downhill through Dehradun and Haldwani. Among Himalayan states, Uttarakhand has the shortest, most conventional route to a container.
