Manipur

Manipur's valley has woven cloth on every homestead loom for centuries; its hills grow citrus and chillies found nowhere else. Both halves of that sentence are now GI-certified, which is what makes this small border state interesting to buyers who trade in provenance.

The loom valley

Manipuri weaving is a women's economy of extraordinary density — the Imphal valley's markets are run and supplied almost entirely by women weavers. The GI-protected Moirang Phee, with its stepped temple-motif border, leads a textile roster (Wangkhei Phee, Shaphee Lanphee) of fine cotton and ceremonial cloths that translate directly into stoles, saris and framed textiles for diaspora and design markets.

Hill harvests with certificates

The ODOP map is a specialty-produce catalogue: the GI-tagged Kachai Lemon of Ukhrul (unusually high vitamin C, eaten fresh and candied), Tamenglong oranges, Senapati's kiwi belt — India's largest — Thoubal's pineapple and Tengnoupal's bamboo. Add the GI-listed Sirarakhong Hathei chilli and black Chak-Hao rice, whose anthocyanin-rich grain is entering health-food formulations, and Manipur supplies a gourmet line no aggregator can imitate.

Trading at the border

Imphal's airport handles perishables and high-value craft; the Moreh land crossing into Myanmar makes the state India's designated gateway for Southeast Asian overland trade. Domestic cargo roads to Guwahati. Supply is smallholder and cooperative — buy in curated lots, not containers.

The fit

Specialty-food importers (black rice, citrus, kiwi, chilli), fashion and interiors buyers seeking documented handloom, and social-impact brands: most Manipuri supply chains pay women producers directly, a story that survives an audit.
