Odisha

Odisha's crafts are so distinct they read like a museum inventory — except every line is in current production and priced for trade. Pattachitra scroll painting, the silver filigree of Cuttack (Rupa Tarakasi, both GI-listed and the city's ODOP product), Pipili appliqué canopies, Lanjia Saura tribal painting: the state's protected-origin roster is one of India's deepest, and its handloom belt adds a textile tradition to rival any.

Sambalpur and the ikat west

The state's one profiled hub, Sambalpur, is the home of Sambalpuri ikat — its district ODOP product — where warp and weft are tie-dyed before weaving into saris, yardage and stoles. Nearby Sonepur weaves the courtly Bomkai style. Together they give fashion buyers a western-Odisha handloom circuit with cooperative structures used to export documentation.

Silver, appliqué and painted cloth

Cuttack's filigree workshops draw silver into lace-fine jewellery and decor — a craft shared with only a handful of towns worldwide. Pipili's appliqué, born stitching temple canopies for Jagannath processions, now supplies garden umbrellas, wall hangings and festival decor. Raghurajpur's painters produce pattachitra on cloth and palm leaf for galleries and premium stationery lines.

Beyond craft

Odisha is also a commodities state — among India's leaders in bauxite, iron and aluminium — and its coastal districts farm shrimp and grow the GI-tagged aromatic Kalajeera rice of Koraput. Sundergarh's ODOP bamboo craft and Rayagada's cotton feed natural-materials supply chains.

Ports and the pitch

Paradip handles the bulk trade; container cargo moves via Visakhapatnam and Kolkata. Buy from Odisha for GI-documented craft — ikat, filigree, appliqué, pattachitra — plus aromatic rice and bamboo lines. For retailers building a "hand-made in India" range with verifiable provenance, few states offer this concentration.
