West Bengal

West Bengal trades on names the world already knows. Darjeeling Tea was India's first GI registration; Banglar Muslin revives the fabric that once clothed empires; Nakshi Kantha embroidery, Sundarban Honey and aromatic Kalonunia rice fill out a protected-origin portfolio that reads like a heritage catalogue. Kolkata — India's oldest port city — remains the export gateway for the entire eastern region.

Tea, first and forever

Darjeeling's ODOP product is its tea, and the district's gardens sell the world's most imitated (and most protected) black tea through Kolkata's auction and private-sale channels. The Dooars and Terai add volume CTC grades. Specialty importers come for garden-direct first flush; blenders for reliable eastern-India supply.

Leather at scale

South 24 Parganas' ODOP designation — leather goods — points to the Kolkata leather complex at Bantala, one of India's largest, where tanneries and factories produce bags, wallets, belts and industrial gloves. Khadim India represents the footwear end of a trade that competes directly with Kanpur and Chennai for European leather programmes.

The craft river

The Ganges delta's craft districts each own a line: Murshidabad silk (its ODOP product, the base cloth for much of India's sari trade), Nadia's Krishnanagar clay dolls, kantha-stitched quilts and stoles from the embroidery belts, and Bengal's terracotta and dokra metal-casting villages. La Opala's Kolkata operations add opalware and tableware at industrial scale — a reminder the state does factories, not just heritage. Aromatic Tulai Panji rice from North Dinajpur and Sundarban honey serve the gourmet shelf.

The eastern gateway

Kolkata and Haldia ports ship the state's cargo and much of the Northeast's; the city's freight-forwarding trade has handled tea, jute and leather for two centuries. For buyers, that means practised documentation in exactly the categories the state sells.

Best fits

Specialty tea importers, leather-goods buyers, home-textile and quilt brands (kantha is under-exploited), tableware distributors, and gourmet retailers building an eastern-India provenance shelf.
